What is Early Literacy?

Early literacy is what children need to know about reading and writing before they are able to read and write.

According to research, there are five early literacy practices that will help children learn prereading skills and get ready to read.  These are easy practices that can be done with children of all ages.  They can be done at home, in the car, at the grocery store, or anywhere you and your child spend time together.

Introduce language by having conversations with your child.

Hear sounds through singing and clapping.

Introduce less common words by reading.  Enjoy books together!

Teach your child that writing is a way to communicate information. Encourage them to scribble or draw.

Demonstrate how your child can express themselves and learn the meaning of words through pretend and dramatic play.
